Textured Hairstyles

If you want a look that says, “I just rolled out of bed, but, damn I look good,” then a textured hairstyle is for you. You can easily pull off the look whether your tresses are long, short, or somewhere in between. Adding texture gives any style, from ponytails to pixie cuts, a rough-around-the-edges look that gives a modern feel to classic hairdos. Although they do take a bit of styling and preparation, the look achieved is one that makes the statement of nonchalance.

Make sure the textured style you choose fits your lifestyle and personality. If you’re super active, you’ll want to consider looks that truly are no-fuss and can wear well even after a workout. Remember that a textured look appropriate for a night on the town will most likely not fly in the office. Textured looks can be spiky and rough, or soft and romantic. Adding texture gives fine hair added volume, and lightens up thicker hair.

Medium-Length Hair

Use layers or curls to add texture to mid-length hairstyles. Create a jagged hairstyle with long layers that are sliced at the ends and then flicked up with product. The look is casual and disheveled. For a softer look that still has texture, create waves with a large round brush, rollers, or a large-barrel curling iron. Let the waves cascade around the face.

Long Hair

You can add texture to long hair a number of different ways, including curls, layers, teasing, or a combination of all three. Consider playing with different up-dos, like buns, ponytails, and braids, then add texture by teasing and installing some product to give the hair more texture. Let long locks fall freely in loose waves, tight curls, or long layers for more texture.

Basic Top Knot Styling Steps:

1. Pull hair into a high ponytail and secure with an elastic. Use a brush if you are going for a sleeker look or simply use your fingers for a more casual, messy style.

2. Tease the pony if needed to add more volume, then wrap the hair in a circular motion around the elastic to create your bun/top knot piece.

3. Once you have fully wrapped and run out of hair, secure the ends as needed with a few bobby pins. The “knot” can be as perfect or imperfect as you want it to be.

4. Loosen the pulled back hair as desired or gently tug out a few tendrils to fall around your face if you want.

5. Secure the entire style with a nice medium hold hairspray. You don’t want hair to appear “crunchy” from too much holding spray.

Creative Top Knot Tips:

  • If you are rocking a set of trendy bangs, you  can leave them out a la Nicole Richie or twist and pin them back into the style like Gwen and Julianne.
  • The twisting and pinning method also works on the back of your hair if you have some shorter layers underneath that won’t stay in a high pony. The extra twist really adds a cool element to the look!
  • If your hair is long enough, braid the ponytail before wrapping to wear a braided top knot. You can also simply leave a small section of the ponytail out, braid it and wrap it around your top knot for another take on the style.
