Lace Wigs

How to Wash Your Lace Wig or any Wig at Home

To keep your wig looking and smelling great you will need to do some upkeep periodically by washing and conditioning it. These steps will show you how to maintain its luster and keep it clean without damaging the lace or hair.

1.Remove all glue and adhesive from the lace and comb out any tangles with a detangling comb before you put the wig in water. Be sure to comb out all tangles from the tips to the ends of the hair so you can manage it a lot easier once it has dried.

2.Fill the sink half-full of water and add a cap full of wig shampoo to the water. Make sure you use shampoo that is especially formulated for wigs. The water should be cool, not hot.

3.Submerge the lace wig into the water and handle it carefully so you don't damage the lace. Gently move it around in the water, then lift it up. Make sure all of the hair is falling in one direction, then dip it up and down in the water a few times to flood it with the shampoo and water. Let it soak for a few minutes then rinse all of the shampoo out of it. If you have a sprayer on your sink use it, otherwise, you can use a light to moderate stream of water to rinse it.

4.Now you're ready to condition your wig. If you have a double sink, fill the opposite side half-full with water. If you have a single sink, drain all of the dirty water and re-fill it half-full with water. Add a cap full of wig conditioner to cool water and mix the conditioner in the water.

5.Submerge the wig into the water and let it sit. The length of time you should let it sit is based on the type of wig you have and the amount of glue and adhesive buildup on the lace. Typically, you'll need to let curly and wavy wigs sit a little longer than straight wigs.

6.Gently move the wig in and out of the water. Remove it from the sink, place it on a flat towel, fold part of the towel over the wig and gently pat the wig dry. Optional: Spray on a leave in conditioner for wigs and pat the wig dry with the towel.

7.Air dry your wig by placing it on a wig head. Gently pin it at the front edge in the middle of the wig with a T-pin to hold it in place. Be careful with the pin on the lace. Let it dry outside in the sun or inside with or without a fan. Wallah, you're done!

Tips & Warnings

Always handle wig gently and carefully to avoid damage to lace and hair.

Using a shampoo and conditioner that is not formulated for wigs will not produce the best results for your wig.
